Activity I
How much we litter our planet
Each instructor took a plastic bag containing garbage and recycling materials. In the classroom we threw the materials over the floor and the desks.

We waited to see the kids reaction and then started a discussion about what had happen, we also asked them questions like:
Why we threw the materials in the classroom?
Do we like it?
Is it right?
Why do we do it on the street?
Is it our problem?
What happen with the waste once it’s out of our house?
As we expected, kids didn’t agree with the fact of the trash in the classroom floor, but they said it was ok to throw it on the street.
We confirm that most of the kids admitted that most of the time they litter.
With this activity we make sure that kids understood that when we throw trash in the street, one way or another we are harming ourselves.
Concepcion school kids understood pretty well our words due to the fact that they had experienced a flooding in the school due to the amount of garbage people throw in that particular river.
Activity II
Waste and garbage is not the same. Let’s separate.
We explained the kids the difference between garbage and waste (we consider waste all the recycling and reusable materials). Once they understood, we proceeded to classify all the materials.
Activity III
How long does it takes to waste and garbage to decompose?
We talked to the kids about how long it takes to waste and garbage to decompose, kids had the wrong numbers, and in general they tough most things decompose in 4 weeks. When we explained to them that materials like plastic and glass take more than 300 years they were shocked.
To probe it, we made an experiment: we put all the materials inside a panty hose and buried them. We’ll live them there for 3-6 months and then evaluate what happened.
Activity IV
Let’s tell everybody what we learned
With paper, pencils, paintbrushes, pilots and paintings we elaborated sings with messages about garbage and waste for the rest of the school.
Besides we collected all the waste and garbage we found in the school and hang them on a rope with messages like In our next visit we will make an oral evaluation to measure the results of the campaign with the sings.
· Doesn’t it look ugly out of the trashcan?
· Please, don’t litter
· We are damaging our planet
