From waste
to art

We continued
elaborating recycled paper, activity that kids loved and worked very well. In
both days we alternate the paper making with other crafts such as tools for the
vegetable garden (made from cardboard) and pen holders in turtle shape.

Restoring
gardens

We clean up the
area and made holes to start planting.
I would like to emphasize the enthusiasm and joy that Concepcion kids
showed they are really motivated which makes the activity easy to develop.

In El Carmen
school I made some modifications due to the fact that the kids are from second
grade and we have to work different with them. Something really important here
is that we have the support from the parents and the teacher.

Vegetable
garden and organic fertilizer

We first talked about the worms: how they are
taking care of them and measure kids interest and compromise with the subject.
We also talked about soil and its importance in a vegetable garden. We made an
experiment so kids can watched how water penetrates into the soil and observe
different layers that formed it.

 potagers

We collected plants and seeds they brought and
planted them in pots together with cilantro and sunflower seeds.

To motivate and create a belonging feeling we asked
them to decide a name and a logo for the garden. Some of the names they came up
with were: Friends of Randy’s Garden, Medicinal Garden, Creative and Medicinal
Garden, etc.

Kids from El Carmen School are making a great job
and they feel happy with the opportunity of working outdoors.

Waste management and proper garbage disposition

Logo and slogan election

Concepcion School selected their logo and slogan,
to do this kids proposed different drawings and phrases and made an open
election. The winner was a Shark with the slogan “the waste disposal unit”

slogan

We also had a rehearsal of the speech we will give
to the rest of the school; inside the speech we have poems, songs and more.

Even when kids are shy with this kind of activities
we keep motivated them to loose the fear.

In
Andres Bello School
we did signs for the trash
cans.

Murals

Concepcion School: We started designing the wall drawing.
Some kids made the drawing, others painted.

Besides
painting we’re always talking
about “life” which gave me the opportunity to manifest with words and
actions messages related with teamwork and values such as patience, equality,
respect, work, water and others.

El Carmen School: We continued the bench painting,
however a special situation happened: one of the teachers didn’t like what the
kids were doing and decided to cover up all the drawings kids made, leaving
everything in one plain color.

They even
decided to change the group for a new one. With this new group some mothers
showed up, helped a lot and the work was good.

 peintures murales

Andrés Bello School: in may rain falls.

We kept working
but rain splash everything we painted. This washed up some of the painting so
we decided to fix it, this gave us the opportunity to spread the message about
what we do is something that leave us satisfied, content and pleased.
