Activities description

1st activity
I am good at observing nature

After introducing the kids to nature elements such as water and trees we made groups of 6 kids and gave them magnifier lens. Each group went outside to observe nature: trees, insects, leaves, flowers, fruits, etc.

The difference between watching and observing was taught.
The magnifier lens was a motivation tool and the kids were amazed with all the things they discovered in the school backyard.
Some of the comments we heard were:

“I didn’t imagine there were so many animals at school”
“I fell like I’m inside the forest”
“I feel like an Explorer”

The difference between watching and observing was very clear in all the schools, the kids understood also that if you want to learn you need to pay attention to little details.
Back in the class we gave them a paper so they can make a drawing or a collage representing the experience.

Activity II
Water Cycle

Being outside we explained the kids the Water Cycle, using the book and some flow charts. Then, we made an experiment, so they can see the process with their own eyes. Here are the steps:
1.    We cut plastic bottles in two pieces, one was filled with dirt and plants, and in the other we glue clouds and a sun.
2.    Then, we put the pieces back together and take them outside for an hour approximately.

3.    What happens is that humidity contained in the soil and leaves is condense by the sun in the upper part of the bottle, showing a miniature water cycle.

The kids really enjoyed this experiment and at the end the water cycle  concept was very clear.

Activity III
Let’s make a story about a drop

To finalize the workshop we gave the kids drop shape papers. In groups they wrote and illustrated a story about a drop’s life.
This activity allowed us to evaluate how much the kids learned about the water cycle.
Analyzing the different stories we conclude that the main objective was accomplished and that the kids understanding about the process was the desirable.

General observations

During this second activity we noticed some other interesting things:
1.    Kids were very anxious about our visit.
2.    Most of them showed up with the activity book ready. We were very happy observing some of the jobs they made and the creativity they showed.

3.    We felt a very motivated environment with the kids, they are very happy and seem to have a lot of fun with the activities.
